Feeling Burnout After Working Out? Here’s How to Beat it

Finding motivation to go to the gym can give you a big adrenaline rush. Whether it’s to achieve the body that you want, or to get that dose of endorphins into your system, there are many good reasons why everyone should commit to a good exercise plan. You start working out religiously and your body seems to adapt to your new habit. You feel great, you look great and you feel like you can safely say that going to the gym has become part of your daily routine.
But then two weeks over that pushup session has become a lot more difficult. That bright lightbulb of motivation starts to flicker as your dream of attaining a slim fit is pushed down on your priority list. Before you know it, you start working out less and less and you’re back at square one.
If you’ve ever felt this way during your exercise journey, don’t worry. You’re not alone. It’s called exercise burnout, where an individual loses focus on the importance of working out. But don’t fret! There are many ways to beat the burnout. Here are a few tips to help you get back on track.
Bored? Change your exercise routine
If all you’re used to is a set exercise routine every single day, you’re bound to get bored of repeating the same old thing. The best way to keep yourself invested is to add something new to keep it interesting. For instance, go outside for a run instead of sticking to the treadmill. If all you’ve ever known is doing sit ups and planks by yourself, why not try looking up an online workout video online? You can try other forms of exercise as well, such as yoga or even dancing. As long as you break a sweat and get your body moving, anything is better than sitting around and doing nothing.
Know your limits and don’t overexert yourself
Sometimes the reason why people abandon their exercise routines is because they’ve pushed their limit. If you find yourself absolutely exhausted and having no physical or mental energy to do anything after post workout, chances are that you’re overexerting yourself. Remember to pace yourself. If you need to, cut back on the number of crunches, Russian twists or laps that you do. Only increase the amount of exercise that you do if you feel that your body can take it. Never force anything.
Practice positive reinforcement
It’s great to be strict on your diet and exercise routine. Practicing discipline and knowing what’s good in moderation is a sign you’re on the right track. But if you find yourself slowly getting disinterested over veggie smoothies as a reward after post workout, maybe it’s a red flag that you aren’t giving yourself enough alluring prizes. But fair warning, changing what the reward might be isn’t an excuse to indulge in a 2000 calorie cheesecake. Instead, treat yourself to things that won’t necessarily be damaging to your body. For instance, after a strenuous two mile run, you can treat yourself to some frozen yogurt at your favourite shop. You can run off the calories on the way back home. Additionally, the rewards don’t have to be food based. Why not treat yourself to some new running shoes or new workout leggings?
Find inspiration online
Sometimes we need a role model to inspire us to workout. Try to find a good and reliable workout guru on YouTube or on Instagram. Sometimes the aesthetics of working out alone can be a big motivation boost to get your feet back on the ground. Additionally, why not try listening to exercise podcasts, or scroll through your Pinterest feed to boost your interest in working out? Oftentimes following someone’s workout journey can inspire you to do the same.
Remember, working out doesn’t have to be a chore. If you change up your exercise routine, integrate more positive reinforcements, find inspiration through social media and remembering not to overexert yourself, you’ll surely find the fun in working out. If you integrate these four tips and tricks, the idea of working out won’t seem like a nuisance, but rather something to look forward to the next day.
